Homework Help and the Lower Grades?

Beginning in November a test program was initiated with the junior high students called, "homework help". This program has been based off of similar programs at Holy Family Catholic School and local area public schools. The goal of the program is to increase student achievment by decreasing the amount of late and missing homework assignments. The program operates by increasing school - parent communication and student accountability. In practice when a child fails to present their assignment they are sent to the office to notify their parent and are expected to either stay after school that day or the next to complete the missing work. So far the program was had solid success in the Junior High. We are considering rolling this program out the to 3rd through 5th grade at the start of the next semester in mid-January. We would love to hear your thoughts.

excellent idea to expand this program to the 3rd thru 5th grades. As a parent I get frustrated that by the time I get home and look at homework assignments it is too late to run back to school for a forgotten book. I like the fact that the kids are made to stay after school or in from recess to complete their homework. This is a good way to put the responsibility back on the child. Lesson learned

I think it would be a good idea to extend this to grade levels 3-5. I have a child in each catergory...current and target.

Good idea!

I guess I am a bit old school about this. Following instructions and being on time is every bit a part of the assignment as the 'content' of the assignment. I never had a teacher give me extra time to do an assignment. My teachers came in two flavors, one was 'if it is late, you failed the assignment' a big zero, the other knocked a grade level off, which if you did shoddy work meant pretty much a failed assignment as well.

If my kid forgets a book, tough nuts, we are not going back for it.

I am all for informing the parents that their kids are not doing their work. Giving them extra time to do it is not fair to those who did do the assignment properly and I think it undermines some important life lessons.

In the junior high the teachers still have the freedom to deduct points for late work even if the student attends homework help. I completely agree that there should still be some penalty.

It is still basicly coddling the kids who don't do the work. The kid who doesn't do the work gets a day and a half extension.

"I completely agree that there should still be some penalty."

On the contrary, you are giving the kid a break, a bonus even. The kid who doesn't do the work on time also gets a chance to get a grade that is significantly better than the zero he would have gotten.
